The Field House Museum is proud to host Susie Cobbledick, a professional book conservator with the Peter H. Raven Library of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
For our series on March 7, Susie Cobbledick will introduce you to her remarkable profession and describe the process she went through to restore one of the Peter H. Raven Library’s treasures, Aimé Bonpland’s “Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre” (Description of the rare plants of Malmaison and Navarre) published in 1812-17.
About the Speaker: Susie Cobbledick has been reading, thinking, and making things with her hands for as long as she can remember. Originally Susie started her career as a librarian, but when libraries became less about books and more about computers and coffee, she decided to change professions. After studying bookbinding and chemistry she completed an apprenticeship with a book conservator. Today she works at the Peter H. Raven Library of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “In an age of automation and mediation, I feel privileged to be able to work my hands away from a screen.”
Making the Connection: On display February 5th through July 19th in the Eugene Field Library is our exhibition: Binding the Written Works. A “bibliomaniac” by nature, Eugene Field was known to have once remarked that a book that is worth reading is surely worth keeping and it is therefore entitled to a durable dress. In Binding the Written Works, the Eugene Field Library takes a closer look at the fascinating art of bookbinding and trends that the medium followed from 1850-1950. The transformation in book binding techniques were plentiful both during Eugene’s life and after his death.
Please RSVP in advance by calling 314-421-4689 or e-mailing info@fieldhousemuseum.org as space is limited.
