Join us on Friday, January 14, at 11 am for a Speaker Series that is sure to draw in a crowd. Dan Martin, cartoonist and designer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, joins us to talk on the art of editorial cartoons to go along with our latest exhibit, Lines with Power and Purpose: Editorial Cartoons. Martin is the sixth cartoonist to take up the pen and draw Weatherbird. Weatherbird is the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s mascot and has made a continuous appearance since 1901! This event will delight as Martin gives guests a survey of cartooning in general and in St. Louis, including the Weatherbird, along with a live demonstration.
This program is free with limited availability in person and on Zoom. Reservations must be made in advance through Eventbrite, by calling the Museum at 314-421-4689, or by emailing info@fieldhousemuseum.org.
About the Speaker
Dan Martin is a St. Louis native and graduate of Lindbergh High School. Today he is known as the cartoonist who draws Weatherbird for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Weatherbird is the longest-running daily cartoon in America, having begun in 1901. But Martin has not been drawing him since then! He is the sixth artist to draw Weatherbird. Before beginning his career in editorial cartoons, Martin did caricatures at Six Flags in his teens and studied art at the University of Kansas. However, he has now been dutifully charged with Weatherbird for over 35 years. In 2001, Martin published The Story of the First 100 Years of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Weatherbird: The Oldest Continuously Running Daily Cartoon in American Journalism, chronicling the bird’s century-long road to stardom.
